Syrian Army shelled the farms area in Barzeh neighborhood of the capital, Damascus. At 6:00 am local time, huge military force arrived to the farms area and at around 7:30 am two massive explosions were heard followed by intensive shooting. According to the Local Coordinations Commites, 9 people were killed due to shelling up to now, and according to the Syrian Revolution General Commission, a building collapsed before the regime forces stormed the area. Until now, many security checkpoint are still depolyed in the neighborhood. People coming from the suburbs of the capital, Damascus, are facing lots of difficulties right now. Since yesterday, and still, many security checkpoints have been surrounding the capital. Security are forbidding entry into the capital and forcing many people to go back to their cities or towns. Only a few people are allowed to enter. The Fortinet devices in Syria that do traffic blocking and shaping are FortiGate-51B. They run with the operating system FortiOS, probably version 4.0. It offers the possibility to the user to block traffic according to the packet's payload, using various rules for matching, through the "Intrustion Prevention System" (IPS). Several documents, including an IPS-specific guide, can be found here: telecomix.ceops.eu . Among other things, the IPS-specific document explains how to create new traffic matching patterns and rules to block matching traffic. Given our knowledge of the equipment in possession of the Syrian authorities, it is likely that it is these FortiGates' capabilities that are used to block some protocols, including OpenVPN. Clarification regarding the Hotmail vulnerability: ANY account that has an alternate email configured in order to send a password reset link is to be considered compromised. An attacker can actually replace this email by his own one by a simple manipulation of the recovery page HTML code. The consequence is that any other social media account using a Hotmail account for password recovery is also compromised. A few more info on the supposedly Iraqi militia possible entering Syria. It is apparently the largest Shiite militia and has strong ties with Iran. Reports indicate that they would have come using buses, meaning they would come to stay. This militia would be originating from Sadr City, in the Eastern Baghdad suburbs. They might cross the Syrian border at the Al Bukamal crossing point, where the road leads to Deir Ezzor. The army consequently requested support from forces inside Aleppo, who (reportedly) sent four mini-buses of Shabeeha. Tonight, Telecomix is releasing all log files in their possession (or at least the ones that the writer is presently aware of) taken from Syrian BlueCoat devices. These are Web filtering proxy devices that have been used by the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment for months in order to filter and monitor all HTTP connections in the country, helping authorities to track, arrest, torture and kill potential opponents. The log files cover the period from 22nd of July to 5th of August, 2011. They concern seven out of the fifteen BlueCoat SG-9000 devices that we found on the STE backbone network. Log files provide dozens of millions of HTTP requests emitted by dozens of thousands of Internet subscribers of all major ISPs in Syria, and represent 54GB of data. They notably include all requested URLs and how the proxy reacted to these requests. We release them to allow any one who wishes to analyze them to provide a deeper insight on Syrian censorship and create more knowledge to circumvent further attacks on freedom of expression. Statistical analyses can reveal interesting information such as forbidden keywords. Two of them that are already identified are "israel" and "proxy". Some experiments that we made to confirm the devices behavior are described here: reflets.info . Subscribers' personal IP addresses have been stripped off the for obvious privacy reasons, but it is indeed possible that some personal data are still present in the requested URLs. Syrian backbone network contains for sure other BlueCoat proxy devices, notably inside Syrian Computer Society IP ranges. More recent logs are not available, maybe because Syrian authorities have eventually secured the logging process and/or because they have upgraded their filtering strategy, now using devices from a German brand called Fortinet.
